CYCLING IN FITZWILLIAM COUNTRY PARK

Ride Bikes | Have Fun | Feel Good

Fitzwilliam Country Park is located in the south eastern area of Wakefield and offers cyclists of all abilities a safe and fun environment to ride.  Offering simple routes for beginners and a small skills loop, Fitzwilliam is the perfect place to spend some time on your bike.

For those wanting a longer ride, Fitzwilliam makes a good staring point for exploring the area by bike, with access to many other areas and attractions possible via the local bridleway network. It is possible to ride from the park to Nostell, Anglers Country Park, Haw Park woods, Rabbit Ings and any other destination that can be reached via the local sections of the Trans Pennine Trail.

The park has ample car parking at weekends (the station car park can get full on week days) and can also be accessed using the local train service to Fitzwilliam. Alternatively, you could use the bridleways and ride your bike to the park.

Since 2019 Wakefield council have been working in partnership with the Black Hills Project to revitalise the park and bring new facilities into the area. This has seen a volunteer led program undertake a wide veriety of tasks from litter picking through to the reconstruction of the old BMX track. This work is planned to continue for the foreseeable future, and further improvements and projects are in the planning stages

Here at Black Hills Project we wanted an easy way to share some of our favourite routes that are either in the park or start form the park. All our routes are designed to be ridden on a mountain bike by riders with experience of riding off road and have a reasonable level of fitness. The routes are mainly local tracks and trails with a natural surface or compacted gravel surface. Easier routes can be found in the family friendly section of the page.
